Massachusetts received a combined revenue of $168.1m, across sports betting and land-based casinos in April 2025, an increase of 14.7% Y-o-Y.
Bay State operators banked more than $100m from casinos alone in April 2025, with this being the state’s strongest April for casino revenue. However land-based casinos did see a decrease of 2.9% when compared to March 2025, meanwhile sports betting’s 26.5% revenue increase M-o-M brought the combined total back up to an increase of 6.9% overall compared to March of this year.
Despite not having legalized Massachusetts online casinos, yet, the report details all revenue from land-based sports betting and casino as well as mobile sports betting.
Massachusetts casino revenue April 2025
Comparing like-for-like, the latest land-based casino revenue results represent a 14.7% increase on the previous year’s total of $97.5m.
The April 2025 $102.1m total is also a monthly record, beating the previous high of $101.2m set in April 2023.
Topping the revenue table, and maintaining its dominance in Massachusetts, with a $63.5m haul was Encore Boston Harbor. This location also contributed $15.9m in taxes.
MGM Springfield was the second-highest, having made $23.5m in revenue and Plainridge Park made $15.1m. However, despite this, Plainridge Park contributed more in taxes – $7.4m – than MGM Springfield, who contributed $5.8m in taxes during April 2025.
Massachusetts sports betting revenue April 2025
Thanks to the recent wave of online sports betting regulation that’s swept across the US, more people are now finding their way into the gambling industry. The latest sports betting revenue report in Massachusetts s this claim.
Total online sports betting wagers for April 2025 was up 15% Y-o-Y from $591.5m to $680.5m. Additionally, total online sports betting revenue also increased 32.6% Y-o-Y from $49.4m to $65.5m.
Furthermore, retail sports betting also saw a huge increase in revenue as it bounced back from a negative figure of -$256,592.64 in April 2024, to a positive figure of $486,828.42 in April 2025, increasing a whopping 289.9% in one year.
Despite the large revenue increase, wagers saw a decline Y-o-Y reducing 17.1% from $11.7m to $9.7m.
With more people than ever gambling online in Massachusetts, it’s a fair bet that this has helped the state’s land-based casinos. Based on this argument, expanding the current laws to include real-money online casinos could drive even more players to Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park.
Sports betting and casino tax contributions
Beyond the arguments for online casino regulation aside, local gambling operators are having a positive impact on the state’s bank balance. However, the tax contributions are somewhat unfairly skewed…
Sports betting remains the dominant activity in of total revenue, but casinos contribute more to the local economy.
Land-based sports betting is taxed at a rate of 15% in Massachusetts, contributing a total of $73,024.21, and online sportsbooks are taxed at a rate of 20% contributing a total of $13.1m in tax. Combined, sports betting contributed $13.2m in taxes.
Meanwhile casinos are taxed at varying rates, with Plainridge Park Casino being taxed at a rate of 49%, contributing $7.4m in tax. MGM Springfield is taxed at 25% and so is Encore Boston Harbor. MGM Springfield contributed $5.9m in taxes and Encore Boston Harbor contributed the most in taxes of $15.9m.
In total, the three land-based casinos contributed $29.2m in taxes during April 2025, while sports betting – both land-based and mobile – contributed a total of $13.2m, which is less than half that casinos contributed.
Year-on-year, sports betting’s tax contributions rose by 33.3% and casino tax contributions also increased, rising by 5.4%.
Could the latest figures reignite calls for online casino regulation?
Both New Jersey online casinos and Michigan online casinos saw online gambling activity surge to almost record highs in April.
As per the latest New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement report, revenue from all online casino operators topped $235.2m for the month, an increase of 25.2% on the previous year.
Michigan online casinos enjoyed a similar amount of success in April. Although the $248.1m monthly total was down 4.8% from March, it was 28.6% more than the same period in April 2024.
These results could potentially revive calls for online casino regulation in Massachusetts. If land-based casinos are bucking the national trend, the legalization of online casinos could generate even more revenue for the state – especially when reflecting year-on-year.
The counterargument, of course, is that online casinos could take away revenue from their land-based counterparts. Indeed, the latest figures from New Jersey and Michigan provide some for this argument when taken in isolation.
However, when taken in context, the latest figures are a potential red herring. Although land-based casinos in New Jersey and Michigan performed relatively poorly in April 2025, compared to the previous month, that’s not the case overall.
The argument against online casinos for the best part of a decade now is that they will kill off their land-based counterparts. This hasn’t happened yet and the legalized states have seen more revenue than they ever have before.
Summary
The MGC April 2025 revenue report reflects that the state’s gambling economy is in a healthy place right now. Achieving 14.7% revenue growth on an ittedly poor April 2024 shows that operators have the ability to rebound.
It was also the biggest April in of total revenue, after April 2023.
Online sports betting wagers were up 15% Y-o-Y to $680.5m and online sports betting revenue also increased by an impressive 32.6% during the same period.
Alternatively, retail sports betting revenue recovered from a minus figure last April to a positive figure this April, $486,828.42 – up 289.9%, but wagers declined 17.1%.
However, as it’s been for the last few years, the elephant on the casino floor remains the lack of online gaming options…
